Who would not like to know what is in store in the future? The astrological predictions based on constellations at the time of birth seems to hold the person hostage for the rest of the life!
Some real life stories of famous astrologers are indeed very fascinating to say the least:
Sahadev, the youngest of the Pandavas is known for his prowess in astrology. Pandavas sworn enemy Duryodhana approached Sahadeva seeking the right time to start the Mahabharata war so that the Kauravas would be victorious. Sahadeva, known for honesty in his profession, marked the appropriate time, muhurta, so that Kauravas would be victorious! But lord krishna, by his trick changed the almanac itself by duping sun and moon gods, through some tricks and changed the course of the war, is another story. Sahadev is also said to have burnt all his astrological notes, furious over himself, after the death of Karna in disgust of unable to predict him as his brother with his astrology.
Bhaskara (1114 – 1185), also known as Bhaskara II and Bhaskara Achārya, the great mathematician and astronomer, is known to have predicted that his daughter Lilavati, would remain childless and unmarried. He studied Lilavati’s horoscope and to avoid this fate, he ascertained an auspicious moment for his daughter’s wedding to overcome this fate. To alert his daughter the correct time, he placed a cup with a small hole at the bottom of a vessel filled with water, arranged so that the cup would sink at the beginning of the propitious hour. He put the device in a room with a warning to Lilavati to not go near it. In her curiosity though, she went to look at the device and a pearl from her bridal dress accidentally dropped into it, thus upsetting it. The auspicious moment for the wedding thus passed unnoticed leaving a devastated Bhaskara II. It is then that he promised his daughter to write a book in her name, one that would remain till the end of time as a good name is akin to a second life. So much for the astrology and its predictions so accurately.
Today, Galileo (1564–1642) is held up as a paragon of rationality. He advocated heliocentrism — the idea that the sun, not the Earth, was at the center of the solar system — fought an anti-heliocentric church at great risk, and greatly advanced astronomy throughout Europe. But in his days was also something like a fortune teller. Galileo didn’t just believe in astrology: he practiced it, conducted it for wealthy clients, and taught it to medical students. Galileo wasn’t alone in keeping up on his signs. His contemporary,, another great astronomer Johannas Kepler too is a fanatic and conducted his own astrological studies, though more reluctantly.
Michel de Nostredame (1503 – 1566), usually known as Nostradamus, a French astrologer, apothecary, physician, and reputed seer, is best known for his book Les Prophéties a collection of 942 poetic verses allegedly predicting future events. People (in)famously interpret his poems as future predictions. Some even interpreted his verses in such a way, that the beginning of Modi era in India was correctly predicted by him! They claim as per the prediction Modi would win in 2024 too and India would reach even greater heights!

It is proven while past is more or less predicted accurately, but not so is the future. While the successful predictions are trumpeted, failures are silently buried, making astrology no better than that of statistical probabilities in a true sense!
In Hindu religion there is a belief that the good and bad deeds of individuals are carried over as ‘karma’; inevitably one has to suffer either in this birth or the ensuing. It is believed that through the knowledge of the bad times through astrological study of one’s horoscope, one may reduce the impact by certain rituals. The life being a circle of opportunities, this regimen, in reality, may also prepare one mentally to put up with the life struggles!
In the southern states Kerala and Tamilnadu, there is said to be more rationalists irrespective of religious following. But when it comes to knowing the future or bend it to their favour by knowing auspicious moment, say to file election paper, buy real estate, begin a big project, for tying the bridal knot etc., – many set aside their rational bent of mind – they approach an astrologer!
A rationalist will ascertain that distant stars move as per astronomical laws. They are least worried about the mortals in earth and can’t disturb the life of individuals in this planet. There must be some truth in that too: I am personally aware of a leading astrologer in my native place who was consulted by many for matching horoscopes. Unfortunately his lost his son-in-law within few days of his daughter’s marriage.
There is a famous story of two astrologers, one very successful and the other, unsuccessful. The king was eager to know his future and consulted both of them. Both of them studied and revealed the future correctly, but explained to the king the results, differently. One said ‘you would happily live long enough to get great grand children’ while the other was blunt: ‘you would not live to celebrate your sathabhishekam!’ One can easily understand who would have been the successful one. So, it is not just the intelligent interpretation of future, even if it is correct, but presentation also matters!
At the end of the day, should we not reconcile to the fate – Whatever will happen will happen – why to know them in advance and lose mental balance! Many may not have the courage to face the fate with confidence after knowing impending disasters! So, at least for faint hearted ignorance is bliss while the braves can face the fate with confidence even without such controversial forecasts!
Shall we leave astrology at that!
