What lesson does the 11th Dec results unfold? With congress being resurrected in the Hindi heartland, would the consolidation of opposition forces become a reality? With many of the veterans in the opposition camp, who not only want the cake but eat it too making their impact, would it be possible? For instance, Would Mayawati not be eager to replicate Kumarasamy example of Karnataka, for the PM chair? Thank God, Jayalalitha is not there to fight it out too…
Except Chhattisgarh, the other two states where BJP has lost many seats to congress, it has not done that badly to consider as though there is any sweep of anti BJP wave? Does it show that development alone cannot win elections? Had Modi campaigned extensively, would it have tilted the scale as it happened in the last leg of Gujarat battle? Even in this election This is vindicated: in constituencies where he has held rallies, the results are favourable to BJP.
2019 does not seem to be as bleak as it is painted by the wishful media on the Modi-Shah duo. But the duo, instead of being complacent for the Modi’s magic, has to forge strong coalition alliances in states where it just not have even toe-hold: Orissa, Telangana, Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal for example. In Bihar there is a reliable partner. instead, if their strategy is to woe the majority by yielding to the rhetorics of hard liners for Ram temple legislation, then they would land in serious trouble. There is no way for the hard liners but to vote for the saffron party anyway!
There are still a few action points for BJP to ponder: Fast tracking of corruption cases – Sadly, till now there is not a single conviction of any of the culprits so far. It is a sore point against the present dispensation. Even the much touted 2G is slipping! Only subramaniam swamy seems to be in a hurry. Empty promises – Another scoring point for the opposition is Modi’s promise during the 2014 elections, that there would be a deposit of at least 10 lakhs in each account. Was it a hollow promise made with the full knowledge that it would not be met? Confidence building: instil confidence in the public mind that institutions such as RBI, CBI, etc., are not under threat….
It should dawn in their minds that Developments alone would not buy votes: Chandrababu has bitter experience.
All said and done, there are many voters who would still like to give Modi another term though half-heartedly. ‘Better of the available chowkidars’… or the TINA ( there is no alternative) syndrome?
One should accept that in the fight for control of the three states that has just concluded, it may appear that Congress has won the battle but BJP has not lost the war! But the moot question is ‘ is BJP juggernaut invincible as it seemed since 2014?’ It is not……
