What leads to boredom?
Some possible reasons could be,
Engaging in the same tasks repeatedly or a predictable routine that fails to challenge the brain, leading to feelings of disinterest and dullness.
Activities that do not provide enough mental engagement or a sense of challenge can make it difficult to focus on the job and lead to boredom.
Being forced to do something that are uninteresting or pointless, like waiting for the bus or train or being stuck in a boring movie would cause boredom.
Feeling powerless or unable to make choices about the activities or environment can heighten boredom.
These days addiction to social media could be a sign of boredom though many would argue it is an escape route!
Would it lead to mental illness?
Continued boredom leads to depression or anxiety; this can lead to not just mental but even physical health issues. To escape from boredom, some would resort to stimulants such as casinos, alcohol and narcotic drugs or sometimes even indulging in violence and unnatural sex. Kleptomania could be one such outlet for millionaires! This explains the common observation that those who built business empires through hard-work could be misers and teetotallers, while their wards invariably would be spendthrifts and drug addicts! They escape easily from boredom with such thrills!
A healthy mind seeks challenge. Learning new skills, reading, solving puzzles, going outdoors, connecting with people which antidote boredom.
It is paradoxical that not only an idle mind breeds boredom but even arduous monotonous tasks lead to the same fate.
In every culture, there are festivals which are designed to break the boredom – with exotic cuisines, social gatherings, community games etc., The celebrations are noisy and polluting and may be detrimental to public health but they serve as outlets do break boredom!
It is astonishingly true that yogic practice trains the mind to be in tranquility that would bring mental peace and bliss! Essentially it tunes the mind to be away from boredom inspite of apparent monotony of being idle!
In modern democracy, elections are a way to break the boredom! Chaos, rallies, fist fights, noise etc., being part, especially in India. Politicians such as Trump, Rahul add flavour to make everyday-news interesting, lively and a circuit breaker for boredom!
Suppose India is devoid of such lawlessness, disorderliness and say nothing to complain about, would it not result in boredom? So, the presence of limited measure of such evils is indeed welcome for a healthy living!!!
So don’t yearn for emigrating to peaceful countries! A vibrant and chaotic India is heaven for ensuring your mental health!!
