இந்த கோரைப் புல் கொண்டு தைத்த பாயில் படுக்கும் போது இதில் இருந்து வரும் கற்பூர வாசத்திற்கு தேள், பூரான் மற்றும் பாம்பு போன்ற விஷப்பூச்சிகள் நெருங்காதாம்;

I love Filter Coffee

It is well known that caffeine content in Coffee, is a central nervous system stimulant that is known for its ability to fight fatigue and increase energy levels. This is because caffeine blocks the receptors of a neurotransmitter called adenosine, and this increases levels of other neurotransmitters in your brain that regulate your energy levels, including dopamine. This could be a short term benefit(?) like other stimulators and hence to be shunned since it could be habit forming as it belongs to the family of narcotics. May that is why it is obliquely referred to in chennai region as ‘Brahmin’s Brandi’!

The addiction is so obsessive akin to smoking to some – some weddings have been almost called off for missing out the ‘coffee break’ deadlines! (Mine is one of them – maternal uncle is the protagonist!)

But, do you know that the Coffee has the ability to preserve the function of the beta cells in pancreas, which are responsible for producing insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. Plus, it’s rich in antioxidants and may affect insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and metabolism. It has been proven to delay the development of type 2 diabetes. The antioxidants improve immunity and hence ensures longevity.

Although studies have turned up mixed results, some research suggests that coffee may help protect against certain neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease; alter fat storage and support gut health, both of which may be beneficial for weight management. It lowers rates of liver scarring and liver cancer in people with liver disease. It improves heart health, reduces the risk of heart failure, stroke and dementia!

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35048949/?mibextid=Zxz2cZ

Now something which is special to South Indian coffee – it contains a blend of Plantation A that is arabica, Peaberry coffee beans variety with chicory, generally in proportion of 40-40-20%. The first two components are traditional coffee beans that provide the taste and flavour of coffee while chicory provides the bitterness and darkness. Chicory, a herb from typical plant roots, is a rich source of beta-carotinine, which is a powerful anti-oxidant.

You tell me now – Is coffee good or bad for health? With some added milk which is a source of protein, three to four cups a day could in fact be considered as a health drink! The traditional South Indian filter coffee is healthier (than espresso or Starbucks or Nescafé). It could be made to suit the individual’s taste with different combinations of the ingredients (the two coffee bean, chicory, milk, sugar) and of course the chef.

Why chef – because, making a good Filter coffee making is an art. First, the beans shall be selected from good plantation, roasted to the right extent, freshly ground to the right consistency, packed to the appropriate density in a two decked filter, hot water shall be poured gently not to disturb the packing, the filtrate collected from the bottom deck of the filter. Milk with not too much fat shall be boiled to which the extract (called decoction in the common parlance) is added. Then add sugar to taste. This admixture, shall be treated in a certain way, that can be only explained in Tamil, (காபியை ஆற்றி), such that it froths. Then you sip bit by bit, don’t drink. It is divine…Many read a newspaper of their choice holding it with their left hand and the coffee tumbler on the right (preferably with a cloth to avoid fingers feeling the temperature)! People customarily prefer brass tumbler to stainless steel. Definitely not a porcelain cup or glass!

Famine would End Present Era

Famine would be the End of present Era – Varkala Janardan Foretells

Hindu mythology is full of ‘take it or leave it’ type but interesting stories. My recent visit to a 2000+ year-old Janardana Swami Temple of Varkala city in Thiruvananthapuram district unfolded one such! This temple has found reference in even the very old Bhagavatha Purana!

Once lord Brahma descended to earth to perform a Yaga in this place. Lord Vishnu became aware of this situation and came to Varkala to remind Lord Brahma about his duty. Lord Vishnu entered the Yagashala in the disguise of an old man. The Brahmins assisting Lord Brahma received the old man and gave him food. But whatever he ate, his hunger was not satiated. Lord Brahma’s assistants went and told him about it. Realising that the old man is none other than Lord Vishnu, Brahma came immediately to see him but was shocked to see Vishnu taking aabhojanam. Lord Brahma then prevented Lord Vishnu from taking it and told him, “Lord, if you eat it, then the final deluge will swallow this world. “ Lord Vishnu then requested Lord Brahma to stop the Yaga and recommence his job of creation.

The janardhana (Lord Vishnu) temple is believed to have been built by the devas. But this temple became dilapidated and was later reconstructed by a Pandya king. The king was once affected by a ghost. He went on a pilgrimage but couldn’t cure himself from the sway of the evil spirit. When he came to the present day Varkala, he saw the remnants of a dilapidated temple by the side the sea. He prayed to God promising he would rebuild the temple there. Next day he had a dream in which he was told to go to the sea and stand near the dilapidated temple. Nearby he would see huge amount of flowers floating in the sea, if he searches there he would get an idol. The present Janardhana idol was recovered from the sea by him. He built the temple and laid down the rules for maintenance of the temple.

The idol of Janardhana has ‘Aabhojana’ in its right hand – with water to start the ritual beginning of eating food by a Brahmin! People believe that this hand is rising slowly toward his mouth.

Believe me, the day that the idol Janardhanaswami takes the ‘aabhojana’ the ‘kaliyuga’ will be over and the world will face the great deluge. And many believes that the hand is slowly raising! It can philosophically mean lack of food or famine would end end the era and advising people to take care! Reverence for food is one of the hallmarks of the Hindus!

All said and done, It feels good and proud to be part of this cultural heritage. More than visiting the temple, I felt fulfilled by what these deities teach the humanity! Serene ambience on the shores of Arabian Sea!

Greed has no Yardsticks

Could there be a yardstick for Greed? Who does not want to make money? Everyone knows risk and rate of returns are directly proportional! Having said that why to legislate some risky investments as illegal, if the individual is willing to risk!

Take for example, Ponzi schemes. Heard of Sharda Ponzi scheme that made Mamta’s TMC to hit the limelight for wrong reasons!

A typical Ponzi scheme, involves paying off early investors with proceeds from later investors. Many outside the financial circles may not know, it is named after Charles Ponzi, who was born in Lugo, Italy, on March 3, 1882. In 1920, Ponzi organized a company called Securities Exchange Co. in which he sold stock (promissory notes) advertising 50% interest after 90 days. Ponzi used funds obtained from new investors to pay off old investors. His scheme ran for over a year before it collapsed, costing his “investors” $20 million. Ponzi spent the last years of his life in poverty and passed away in 1941.

While this type of fraudulent investment scheme was not invented by Ponzi, it became so identified with him that it now is referred to as a “Ponzi scheme“.

But it is Bernie Madoff, who is famous for operating probably the largest Ponzi scheme in history. Madoff’s Ponzi scheme was operated through the wealth management portion of his business. It was a classic – and, in fact, frighteningly simple – Ponzi scheme. Madoff attracted investors by promising them extraordinarily high returns on their investments. However, when investors handed over the money, Madoff just deposited it into his personal bank account at Chase Manhattan Bank. He paid “returns” to earlier investors using the money obtained from later investors. Clients’ trading statements, showing their alleged profits, were complete fabrications.

It’s estimated that Madoff’s fraud extended for more than 20 years and ran to over $50 billion. Madoff was arrested in 2008 and eventually sentenced to 150 years in prison. So people haven’t learnt from their experience and law makers couldn’t detect a scam ‘timely’!

Now a days you hear of scandalous Ponzi schemes running in thousands of crores every year without a break!

There is another form of financial fraud called pyramid scheme. Ponzi schemes simply require a cash investment to earn returns, while Pyramid schemes, on the other hand, need you to pay a fee and/or purchase products and services in order to participate and earn income.

Burn Lounge scam for example, is an online music store that lured persons who paid for the right to sell music, while earning awards for recruiting other individuals into the business. The bonuses were not in any way tied to sales of merchandise. Between 2005 and 2007, the company is said to have conned 50000 people. $17 million was fined.

In 2008, Nine women have been found guilty of running a £21m get-rich-quick scheme, fleecing at least 10,000 victims after luring them in with “champagne celebration nights” and encouraging them to “beg, borrow or steal” the £3,000 needed to invest in the scam. Give and Take is an English scheme in which a group of operators requested £3,000 as an entry fee and promised a £20,000 bonus for recruiting a certain amount of new members. The individuals were convicted and served jail terms.

While such pyramid schemes are illegal, multilevel marketing (MLM), that works on almost similar principles, is legal!

If you join an MLM program, the company may refer to you as an independent “distributor,” “participant,” or “contractor.” Most MLMs say you can make money two ways: by selling the MLM’s products yourself to “retail” customers who are not involved in the MLM; by recruiting new distributors and earning commissions based on what they buy and their sales to retail customers. Your recruits, the people they recruit, and so on, become your sales network, or “downline.” MLM is not a pyramid scheme, it will pay you based on your sales to retail customers, even if you don’t recruit new distributors. Do you recall the popular ‘Tupperware’?

Are you clear now? Where lies the line of demarcation between pyramid scam and genuine MLM network?

Finance is such a complex science, that only crooks can make quick money, legally, till a new law is passed to declare such schemes as ‘illegal’! By the way wizards vouch ‘Bit coins’ neither fall under ‘Ponzi’ nor ‘Pyramid’ and hence are not illegal (so far). But who knows, what the future holds?

So, if you want to take risks legally, you are not categorised under ‘Geedy’ – from investing in fixed deposits to share market ‘stocks’; But if you start a ponzi or pyramid, sooner or later you would be ‘booked’ depending upon how ‘connected’ you are!

Here comes the story of my personal greed- Sometime back, when I was fiddling with my daughter’s mobile in Singapore, where I went for holidaying, a message popped up ‘simple questions – if you answer correctly you would get a free IPhone – conditions apply’! I was lured; I didn’t notice each SMS reply cost 1$. I started around 6 in the morning when everyone was busy organising to go to work. Each correct answer came with a response, ‘congrats – few more questions – the phone is yours’; around 830, I was fed up and closed the session! My daughter got a bill for an unexplained entry of 210$ (it was post paid) that month! Puzzled, she asked me, what did I do with her mobile? I couldn’t recall anything immediately. But later I mumbled her the episode with guilty. Obviously this being a case of cheating, she took up with authorities. They refused to accept our claim for the fraudulent phishing or scam as ‘the terms and conditions’ were accepted before entering the ‘quiz’! I never thought I could be taken for a ride so easily in Singapore! I felt guilty and my daughter paid the price for my greed!

That is Fraud in the new internet age! I paid for my greed to own an iPhone at no cost!

Chariot festival of Thiruvarur

The temple chariot of Thiruvaroor in Tamil Nadu, ‘ஆழித்தேர்’ as it is popularly called, is the World’s biggest and heaviest. Though car festivals are a common feature in most temples of south India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, Annamalaiyar Temple, Tiruvannamalai, Chidambaram Natarajar Temple are among the few other temples that possess huge wooden chariots for regular processions. But the temple car of Thiruvarur is unique of its kind! There is a popular saying ‘திருவாரூர் தேரழகு, திருவிடைமருதூர் மதிலழகு’.

The 30-foot tall temple car of Thiruvarur, which weighs 220 ton, is raised to 96 feet with bamboo sticks and decorative clothes, taking its total weight to 350 tons. Isn’t a treat to watch its being pulled by devotees with reverence? It requires 12000 persons to drag the chariot, though two bulldozers aid in the human effort nowadays. Around 4000 devotees pull the chariot in recent times. During major overhauling by BHEL, Trichy, the wooden wheels were replaced with steel. To improve safety, unique differential system for turning and hydraulic breaking were designed. No overhead cabling in the car streets. Also the roads were concreted to bear the west and tear due to the movement of this massive chariot movement.

The original ‘Azhi Ther’ was severely damaged due to a freak fire accident in 1922 and the chariot was rebuilt later. After 1948, Azhi Ther, for unknown reasons, stopped running. Only after 1988 the temple car began to run after renovation. It was in 1988 steel wheels were fixed to bear the enormous weight as part of major restoration work. For some reasons it was discontinued. The car festival was then held in the temple in 2010, after a gap of 20 years. The atheist DMK chief and Tiruvarur MLA M Karunanidhi is said to have taken efforts to revive the age-old car festival at the temple! It then took six years for a total renovation. Even since 2016, the Temple car festival of Thiruvarur has become an annual feature in the Tamil month of பங்குனி – that is end March or beginning of April!

According to the Bhagavata Purana, the devas were once defeated by the asuras. They sought the refuge of the king named Muchukunda, described to be a great warrior and a pious man. King Muchukunda granted the devas shelter until they rallied themselves under Kartikeya, the son of Shiva. After their triumph, the devas and their king, Indra, expressed their gratitude and presented to him this chariot made from the Devadaru wood obtained from the churning of ocean of milk. Hence the name ஆழித்தேர், meaning ocean chariot!

No wonder there is a sea of humanity to have this wonderful visual treat! It is real treat to the eyes to watch the chariot taking a turn in the four car street corners!

One should be really proud of this rich cultural heritage!

Shall we leave astrology at that?

Who would not like to know what is in store in the future? The astrological predictions based on constellations at the time of birth seems to hold the person hostage for the rest of the life!

Some real life stories of famous astrologers are indeed very fascinating to say the least:

Sahadev, the youngest of the Pandavas is known for his prowess in astrology. Pandavas sworn enemy Duryodhana approached Sahadeva seeking the right time to start the Mahabharata war so that the Kauravas would be victorious. Sahadeva, known for honesty in his profession, marked the appropriate time, muhurta, so that Kauravas would be victorious! But lord krishna, by his trick changed the almanac itself by duping sun and moon gods, through some tricks and changed the course of the war, is another story. Sahadev is also said to have burnt all his astrological notes, furious over himself, after the death of Karna in disgust of unable to predict him as his brother with his astrology.

Bhaskara (1114 – 1185), also known as Bhaskara II and Bhaskara Achārya, the great mathematician and astronomer, is known to have predicted that his daughter Lilavati, would remain childless and unmarried. He studied Lilavati’s horoscope and to avoid this fate, he ascertained an auspicious moment for his daughter’s wedding to overcome this fate. To alert his daughter the correct time, he placed a cup with a small hole at the bottom of a vessel filled with water, arranged so that the cup would sink at the beginning of the propitious hour. He put the device in a room with a warning to Lilavati to not go near it. In her curiosity though, she went to look at the device and a pearl from her bridal dress accidentally dropped into it, thus upsetting it. The auspicious moment for the wedding thus passed unnoticed leaving a devastated Bhaskara II. It is then that he promised his daughter to write a book in her name, one that would remain till the end of time as a good name is akin to a second life. So much for the astrology and its predictions so accurately.

Today, Galileo (1564–1642) is held up as a paragon of rationality. He advocated heliocentrism — the idea that the sun, not the Earth, was at the center of the solar system — fought an anti-heliocentric church at great risk, and greatly advanced astronomy throughout Europe. But in his days was also something like a fortune teller. Galileo didn’t just believe in astrology: he practiced it, conducted it for wealthy clients, and taught it to medical students. Galileo wasn’t alone in keeping up on his signs. His contemporary,, another great astronomer Johannas Kepler too is a fanatic and conducted his own astrological studies, though more reluctantly.

Michel de Nostredame (1503 – 1566), usually known as Nostradamus, a French astrologer, apothecary, physician, and reputed seer, is best known for his book Les Prophéties a collection of 942 poetic verses allegedly predicting future events. People (in)famously interpret his poems as future predictions. Some even interpreted his verses in such a way, that the beginning of Modi era in India was correctly predicted by him! They claim as per the prediction Modi would win in 2024 too and India would reach even greater heights!

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/blogs/francois-gautiers-blog-for-toi/nostradamus-and-india/

It is proven while past is more or less predicted accurately, but not so is the future. While the successful predictions are trumpeted, failures are silently buried, making astrology no better than that of statistical probabilities in a true sense!

In Hindu religion there is a belief that the good and bad deeds of individuals are carried over as ‘karma’; inevitably one has to suffer either in this birth or the ensuing. It is believed that through the knowledge of the bad times through astrological study of one’s horoscope, one may reduce the impact by certain rituals. The life being a circle of opportunities, this regimen, in reality, may also prepare one mentally to put up with the life struggles!

In the southern states Kerala and Tamilnadu, there is said to be more rationalists irrespective of religious following. But when it comes to knowing the future or bend it to their favour by knowing auspicious moment, say to file election paper, buy real estate, begin a big project, for tying the bridal knot etc., – many set aside their rational bent of mind – they approach an astrologer!

A rationalist will ascertain that distant stars move as per astronomical laws. They are least worried about the mortals in earth and can’t disturb the life of individuals in this planet. There must be some truth in that too: I am personally aware of a leading astrologer in my native place who was consulted by many for matching horoscopes. Unfortunately his lost his son-in-law within few days of his daughter’s marriage.

There is a famous story of two astrologers, one very successful and the other, unsuccessful. The king was eager to know his future and consulted both of them. Both of them studied and revealed the future correctly, but explained to the king the results, differently. One said ‘you would happily live long enough to get great grand children’ while the other was blunt: ‘you would not live to celebrate your sathabhishekam!’ One can easily understand who would have been the successful one. So, it is not just the intelligent interpretation of future, even if it is correct, but presentation also matters!

At the end of the day, should we not reconcile to the fate – Whatever will happen will happen – why to know them in advance and lose mental balance! Many may not have the courage to face the fate with confidence after knowing impending disasters! So, at least for faint hearted ignorance is bliss while the braves can face the fate with confidence even without such controversial forecasts!

Shall we leave astrology at that!

Is there another language like Sanskrit?

Have you ever faced an embarrassment when narrating skits, instead of being instantaneously understood and laughed, getting bust when the listener asks for explanation! Poetry is of the same genre and for only quick witted. The task is much more difficult if it is not from one’s mother tongue – it is a Herculean task to detail the nuances. Let me try to do the near impossible!

One classic example of such works in Sanskrit is Seetha Ravana Sampada Jari written by Rama Sastri in 1896. This composition of 100 or so verses is essentially the story of Ramayana but the highlight is conversation between Seetha and Ravana at Asoka Vana. This fascinating scene is choreographed as observed by Hanuman hiding in the trees and narrating it to Rama on his return. This section has 59 slokas of four stanza each. In each sloka the first three lines are by Ravana coaxing Seetha with his greatness and valour and how easily Rama would be defeated in a war. Seetha in the last line would reply by just saying to repeat whatever he said by replacing either with or removing or changing one or two letters or Akshara. The whole meaning would get reversed as one of praise of Rama and chiding Ravana.

Sanskrit as a language has many facets of pliability and one of them is ‘Chitra Kavi’. This is composed as though it is a painting with some interplay of letters or syllables. One way could be that the meaning of one stanza is changed by either omitting or replacing or adding another letter at some appropriate place that could be embedded in the next stanza. English may not be as pliable as this. This could be explained in Tamil as follows:

It might be difficult to express the joy when I was fortunate to read and understand some of the slokas. I realised that it is all the more difficult to bring out the beauty of this work in words and share with others!

Legislate for Citizen Health?

Should state regulate the list of good and bad habits and legislate laws for your health? Does alcohol comes in that category? Can state dictate one to be teetotaler?

There are evidences that Prohibition reduces petty crimes and incidences of serious health conditions such as cirrhosis of liver – this is the statistics of US when prohibition was in vogue between 1920-33; it was lifted as there was revenue loss due to spurious liquor business apart from increased incidences of corruption. In Tamil Nadu (TN) too there were many deaths due to illicit liquor! Experience shows it is impossible to impose prohibition and stop illicit liquor brewing not only in india but worldwide! Ask Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of state of Bihar in India – he would tell stories!! Caught between devil and the deep sea!

Why should there be so much of noise in TN for prohibition when no other state is following save Gujarat and Bihar! Surprisingly the underdeveloped north eastern states of Nagaland and Mizoram are also dry! People tend to booze and forget the miseries when the state is under developed, so goes the saying!

TN politics is strange – politicians do not confront with facts and figures for fear of losing women votes if they talk openly against prohibition!! For reasons unknown, people of TN believe that they are holier than cow! In no other state prohibition is such a hot topic of discussion, despite all the ills of that evil.

Are you legislating for compulsory Yoga practise or even physical exercises despite its positive evidence on good health? Why Cigarettes are not banned despite their being known cause of cancer? Are you not not keeping them from your list of laws and categorise as personal choices?

Should the government enter into your personal space of liberty and freedom? Why not follow the principle of advices such as “Smoking and drinking are injurious to health” slogans and leave it at that? Would it be construed as being irresponsible?

Health is always a tricky issue – one day the ‘experts’ will say cholesterol is bad; down the line they will withdraw the advice; it is not just fats, there are many like that! What is good for your health, is your choice, not states’ business!
